Cardio and diet

To blast calories you need to break a sweat. Zero size cannot be achieved without sweating out the excess flab. And cardio exercises help you accomplish that; they boost your stamina, make you energetic and flexible to take up an even rigorous fitness regime. Jogging on the treadmill, cross-trainer, jogging, swimming and skipping are the best forms of cardio. While a treadmill exercises the whole body, cross-trainers are for the hips and thighs. You may even go for the jogging option at a gym; there are kinds of cycles, for thighs and the other for thighs and stomach.
Diet
Gradually cut down on red meat, fries, butter, cheese, ghee and junk food of every kind. Take a nice dose of water depending on your body requirement. Coconut water and fresh fruit juices can also be taken post meals. Food intake should be half of your normal diet. You can consume small portions of all kinds of food you like, but say no to fries, butter and cheese.

Avoid snacks in between meals

Eating meals in the work of the short interval between breakfast & lunch may lead your weight-loss efforts to go in vain, a new study has revealed.
According to a study led by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Middle, ladies dieters who grab mid-morning snacks lose less weight compared to those who abstain from it.

In the work of the year-long study, the researchers found that mid-morning snackers lost an average of 7 percent of their total body weight while those who ate a healthy breakfast but did not snack before lunch lost over 11 percent of their body weight.
For the study, a snack was defined as any food or drink that was consumed between main meals.
"Mid-morning snacking therefore might be a reflection of recreational or senseless eating habits than eating to satisfy true hunger," said Anne McTiernan, the lead author of the study.
"We think this finding may not relate necessarily to the time of day snacks, but to the short interval between breakfast & lunch."
"Snacking could be part of a dieter's toolkit if they are eating in response to true hunger. Individuals ought to decide in the event that they experience long intervals - such as over hours - between meals."
They said that while snacking close to a main meal may be detrimental to weight loss, waiting long between meals also may sabotage dieting efforts.
"Adding a snack might help people deal better with hunger & ultimately help them to make more sound choices at their next meal."
The ancillary study involved 123 overweight-to-obese postmenopausal Seattle-area ladies, ages 50 to 75, who were randomly assigned to either a diet-alone intervention (aim: one,200 to two,000 calories a day, depending on beginning weight, & fewer than 30 percent of every day calories from overweight), or diet and exercise (same calorie & overweight restrictions and 45 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per day, days a week).
While the ladies received nutrition counselling they were not given any specific instructions or recommendations about snacking behaviour.
At the finish of the study the ladies were asked to record the time, type & frequency of meals consumed on a traditional day. Percent of calories from overweight, fibre & fruit & vegetable intake were also estimated using a food-frequency questionnaire.
"Our study suggests that snacking may well help with weight loss if not completed close to another meal, if the snacks are healthy foods that can help you feel full without adding lots of calories."
"Many people think that a weight-loss program has to mean always feeling hungry," McTiernan said.
The study will be published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Tips for first time sex

First time sexual encounters tend to be distressing if handled incorrectly and with improper sexual knowledge.
To help you prepare for your first time at sex, Dr. Pulkit Sharma, Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalytical Therapist, Vimhans, shares the top 8 things to keep in mind for first time sex.

Safety first: A lot of people feel very emotional and passionate about the first time sex and indeed the passion should be enjoyed but not at the cost of safety. Use condoms to keep away from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Choose a reliable partner who cares for you rather than going in for a casual sex encounter as the latter might be unsafe and risky.

Don't have very high expectations: While many people wish the first time to be a magical and memorable experience, it may not be so. Learning to have good sex is a skill, which develops over time. Having very high expectations can make you feel hurt and disappointed.

Don't forget to enjoy foreplay: Even though you may be anxious or excited do not jump to it. Take your time and give the other person time to warm up by an extended foreplay. For the first time, the more foreplay you do, the better it is.

Make sure you are amply aroused before intercourse: You need to be amply aroused before intercourse. Otherwise the first time sex can be painful and disastrous.

Don't assume that he's the expert: More often than not, men like to boast that they are experts at sex because they are often ashamed to admit their insecurity and inexperience. So, do not assume that he's the expert. Communicate your desires with your partner and ensure that it isn't always him or her leading.

Don't fake it: Many people fake being satisfied in order to please their partner. Such a step can breed resentment and eventually spoil your relationship, so make sure you are not faking it. For the first-timers faking orgasm is a big no-no!

Don't expect to have an orgasm: Although orgasm heightens pleasure, you can still enjoy sexual experience without it. Do not expect orgasm, if it happens it is good, if not then just go with the flow and enjoy the experience.

Will it hurt or will I be a good lover? First time sex may hurt a little and that does not mean that you are not a good lover. But if you feel hurt be open and frank in communicating it. If you have a sensitive partner they will be able to understand and take care.

Add it to your every day diet

How to lose weight at home

Losing weight is hard work, & what is going on at home can help or delay weight loss. So pick up the cues!
Stock your refrigerator with low cal food
Do you stock  crunchy chocolates or frozen fries in your fridge? This is the time to restock your refrigerator with healthy, low calorie food options. In the event you require to lose weight, it is vital to have fruits, low calorie food options in sight. This is to be positive that everytime you feel like munching, you do not touch the 'untouchables'.

Downsize your wardrobe
Open your wardrobe & in the event you see stocks of dresses that comfort your excess paunch or hide those love angles, get rid of them. Possibly your clothes are making you cozy in your skin! Watch out for that.

Exercise in your home
Whatever little or large you have invested in your home exercise equipment, make positive it is placed at strategic locations such that it always crosses your line of sight. It could be your yoga mat, skipping rope or even a stepper. "With exercise equipment around, you are forced to be more active, thus enabling you to spend some time on it," says fitness specialist Leena Mogre. So make positive you do not stock it up inside your cupboard & let it be in.

Do your household work
A recent study proved that housework & pet walks help you burn far more calories than any gym process. Hence, take your pooch out for walks & mop your floor time some time. The process will effectively help you burn calories.

Kick TV out of the bedroom
The more time you spend watching tv, the more you lose focus of your fitness goals. Recent studies have revealed that television-viewing is implicated as a cause for obesity in babies. So, get that fool box out of your room. It is feasible for you to to catch up on sleep & hence feel more active the next morning; perhaps, active to hit the treadmill.

20 WAYS TO LOOSE WEIGHT

In order to consistently keep your weight under control, it is advisable to walk about 10,000 steps daily. It is the easiest activity among all the exercise programs and does not involve stress to the body. Apart from the activity of walking, a systematic dietary pattern should be followed so that you are always free from the obesity symptoms.Generally the people, who are overweight, are usually not interested in physical activities. They prefer doing any type of work but without moving from one place to another. They usually enjoy watching TV and having a
delicious munch. For this category, fixing a program like aerobics or floor exercises would require greater efforts. Therefore walking is the most recommendable form of exercise. For the beginners it is ideal to walk for 15-20 minutes daily. Gradually, the time can be extended day after day until they are capable of walking 60 minutes daily. When the doctors prescribe pills for the patients, they advice the patients to spend some time walking around. The tablets such as Phentermine are effective only when combined with the healthy dietary patterns and a daily exercise activity. Losing weight is a difficult task, and people who are disciplined and take exercise seriously, would lose weight.

20 WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT
1. Take it one step at a timeStart by paying attention to what you eat. Cut back on fat and sweets and add more fruit and vegetables. After you have that under control, add exercise. If you hate to exercise try it for only 15 minutes a day at first, then a 1/2-hour. Keep in mind that while you are exercising you are burning calories and not eating. Also, it will be easier if you chose an activity that you enjoy.
2. Find a friendIt is always good to have support when you are trying to lose weight. Find a friend who wants to lose weight and compare notes, weigh-in together and maybe even have a contest.
.3. Use weightsWorking out weights will build muscle and raise your metabolism so you will burn more calories. Also, muscle takes up less space than fat so you will be smaller ( but probably weigh more).
4. Eat fewer carbsDon't eat as much bread and pasta and you will see a difference.
5. Set a goalSet a deadline to lose the weight and write it down. For example, ' By Dec 14/04 I will weigh 150 lbs or less'. Put it somewhere you will see it daily
.6. Give up sodaIf you drink a soda or 2 a day you are adding empty calories. If you find it hard to stop completely, cut back at first and drink water instead.
7. Grill or boilAvoid fried meat, grill and use lots of spices. You will get used to it and probably enjoy it more.
8. Don't buy junk foodWhen you go shopping, don't go on an empty stomach and you will be less likely to buy junk food. Keep your home 'junk food free' so you won't be tempted to indulge.
9. Eat breakfastConsume most of your calories early in the day and always eat breakfast. Don't eat after 8pm and not only will you avoid those added calories but you will sleep better.
10. Give yourself a treatWhen you tell yourself that you can't have something you want it more. Give yourself a treat once a day ( ie. half a cookie) and you won't feel you are missing out.
11. Use smaller platesTrick yourself into believing that you are eating more by using a smaller plate.
12. Drink lots of waterDrink water when you are feeling hungry and you will get that 'full' feeling.
13. Don't eat everything on your plateMany times we eat just because it's there. Pay attention to when you have had enough.
14. Eat five or six meals a dayEating more frequently will keep you from getting too hungry.
15. Plan your workout sessionsWrite your workout sessions in your journal or planner.
16. Stay away from fad dietsFad diets don't work. If you lose weight fast chances are that you will gain it back ( and more) just as fast. It takes time to put it on and time to take it off.
17. Do several workouts a dayWhile you are watching TV do crunches and leg lifts.
18. Measure your foodIf you decide to have junk food for a snack - be sure to measure and control what you eat.
19. Keep pre-cut vegetables...and ward off those cravings
.20. Create Good Habits.

Water for weight loss

Water Works for Weight Loss
Nothing quells the appetite like water, lots and lots of water. Start out with two quart bottles in the morning and carry one with you to work or wherever you go. If you like, divvy up the 64 ounces of water into eight (8-ounce) bottles or four pint (16-ounce) bottles to carry around with you all day. Freeze half of them the night before and they will last all day, even in a hot car. Keep some unfrozen so they will be ready to drink immediately.

Yes. You will have to make more frequent bathroom trips, but it is worth it. Drink your 64 ounces of water before dinner, if possible, so you're not up half the night going to the bathroom.
Water not only fills you up and lessens your appetite, it prevents those "hungry horrors" we all encounter when our blood sugar drops and we reach for cookies, candy, ice cream, fries or other high-calorie treats. Water also flushes out the system, rids the body of bloat and toxins and rosies up the complexion. Now, start splashing.

Thyroid - Hypothyroid - Meaning - Causes - Symptoms - Treatment

What is Hypothyroid?

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism," it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism.

Causes

About three percent of the general population is hypothyroidic. Factors such as iodine deficiency or exposure to Iodine can increase that risk. There are a number of causes for hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide. In iodine-replete individuals hypothyroidism is generally caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or otherwise as a result of either an absent thyroid gland or a deficiency in stimulating hormones from the hypothalamus or pituitary.

Hypothyroidism can result from postpartum thyroiditis, a condition which affects about 5% of all women within a year after giving birth. The first phase is typically hyperthyroidism; the thyroid then either returns to normal, or a woman develops hypothyroidism. Of those women who experience hypothyroidism associated with postpartum thyroiditis, one in five will develop permanent hypothyroidism requiring life-long treatment.
Hypothyroidism can also result from sporadic inheritance, sometimes autosomal recessive.

Hypothyroidism is often classified by the organ of origin:

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Fatigue
Weakness
Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
Coarse, dry hair
Dry, rough pale skin
Hair loss
Cold intolerance (you can't tolerate cold temperatures like those around you)
Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
Constipation
Depression
Irritability
Memory loss
Abnormal menstrual cycles
Decreased libido

Each individual patient may have any number of these symptoms, and they will vary with the severity of the thyroid hormone deficiency and the length of time the body has been deprived of the proper amount of hormone.
You may have one of these symptoms as your main complaint, while another will not have that problem at all and will be suffering from an entirely different symptom. Most people will have a combination of these symptoms. Occasionally, some patients with hypothyroidism have no symptoms at all, or they are just so subtle that they go unnoticed.
If you have these symptoms, you need to discuss them with your doctor. Additionally, you may need to seek the skills of an endocrinologist. If you have already been diagnosed and treated for hypothyroidism and continue to have any or all of these symptoms, you need to discuss it with your physician.

Treatment

Hypothyroidism is treated with the levorotatory forms of thyroxine (L-T4) and triiodothyronine (L-T3). Both synthetic and animal-derived thyroid tablets are available and can be prescribed for patients in need of additional thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is taken daily, and doctors can monitor blood levels to help assure proper dosing. There are several different treatment protocols in thyroid replacement therapy.

Iodine is unique among minerals as it is an essential ingredient in hormones. It acts on the hormones of the thyroid gland, which control the body's activity rate, growth and development and the healthiness of skin and hair.

Iodine's role is confined to producing the hormone thyroxine. About two-thirds of the body's iodine is in the thyroid gland, while the remainder is in the hormone itself. If there is too much thyroxine the body's activity rate - its basal metabolism - speeds up; if there is too little, the body's activity rate slows down. If we do not get enough iodine in our diet, the thyroid gland becomes swollen and the swelling appears just below the jaw. The enlargement of the gland is called goitre, and is common in areas where the soil is iodine-deficient.

Taking Iodine Rich Foods are very important for these patients. Try to take any of the following food in you diet daily.

Haddock
Cod
Condensed milk
Trifle
Eggs
Mayonnaise
Jaffa cakes
Cheddar cheese
Malt bread
Naan Bread
Yorkshire pudding
Cheese cake
Sea kelp
Seaweed
Sea foods
Most Fresh fish
Fish oils
Sea salt
Iodized salt

Once fat, you'll never get slim

Researchers claim that fat people, who lose weight either by dieting or exercising, will put it all back on again within a year.

Their study of 25,000 people provides further evidence of the prevalence of "yo-yo dieting" where slimmers get into a cycle of losing weight and regaining it, reports the Daily Mail.

The scientists, from the Medical Research Council's National Survey of Health and Development, have concluded it is better to avoid getting fat in the first place.

They followed 5,362 men and women from their birth in 1946 and 20,000 from birth in 1958, measuring their weight and blood pressure and assessing their lifestyles.

The researchers found both groups began gaining weight in the 1980s and have steadily increased in size ever since.

Dr Rebecca Hardy, the council's programme leader on body size, said: "Once people become overweight, they continue relentlessly upwards. They hardly ever go back down.

"A few lose weight but very few get back to normal. The best policy is to prevent people becoming overweight.

"For men (weight) goes up steadily through life. For women it starts slowly and accelerates in the mid-thirties," she added.

But the study's findings do not mean dieting is pointless, as eating less and taking more exercise can increase fitness and lower blood pressure.

Don’t let allergies get you down

An allergy is a medical condition that makes you feel ill when you eat or come in contact with a particular substance.

General physician Dr Shahid Barmare says, "Allergies happen when the immune system mistakenly believes that something the person ate or came in contact with, is harmful to the body. To protect the body, the immune system produces IgE antibodies to that allergen. IgE antibodies then trigger mast cells (allergy cells in the body) to release chemicals into the bloodstream. One of these chemicals is histamine. Histamine acts on the eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin or gastrointestinal tract and causes symptoms of an allergic reaction. Once the body has made antibodies against a certain allergen, these antibodies easily recognise the allergen. Each time the person comes in contact with the allergen, the body releases histamine into the bloodstream again, creating allergy symptoms," says Dr Barmare.

Cosmetic physician Dr Rashmi Shetty lists common allergies that affect people:

Dust allergy
Having runny or stuffy nose, itchy, watery eyes and sneezing due to dust exposure such as vacuuming, sweeping, and dusting means you are affected by dust allergy.

Symptoms
Well-known dust allergy symptoms are unmanageable sneezing, itchy, watery eyes and in some cases a small red coloured dust allergy rash located on some part of your body such as your stomach or your upper arm.

Pollen allergy
During spring and summer, tiny particles are released from trees, weeds and grasses. Known as pollen, these ride in the air and enter noses and throats, triggering a type of seasonal allergic rhinitis called Pollen Allergy.

Symptoms:
Although pollen allergy symptoms are similar to cold symptoms, you can tell the difference because colds are associated with thicker nasal secretions, sore throat, hoarseness, and possibly fever. Also, colds tend to get better fairly quickly.

Contact allergy
Contact allergy is caused in sensitive individuals, who can get allergic reactions through different things such as metals (gold-silver oxidised jewelry), leather (wrist watch), synthetic fibers (clothing such as undergarments).

Symptoms:
Symptoms of a contact allergy usually occur within 30 minutes after exposure to the allergen, although symptoms may take up to several hours to appear. Common allergens include poison oak and poison ivy, latex, rubber, nickel, preservatives, dyes, medications, fragrances, and cosmetics such as hair dye and perfume.

Sun allergy
Sun allergy is having small white patches due to sunlight on the exposed areas of the body.

Symptoms:
Having small white patches due to sunlight on the exposed areas of the body. In addition, there is a syndrome known as "sun drunk" which affects some children who suffer from a sun allergy.

Food allergies
Symptoms include itching in the mouth, hives, itching or eczema, redness around the mouth, swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body, wheezing, nasal congestion or difficulty in breathing, pain in the lower abdominal area, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, light headedness or fainting.

"These symptoms are immediately seen after having an allergy causing food. While severe allergy can cause drop in the blood pressure, tightening of the airways making it very difficult to breath, losing one's consciousness. The best way to avoid allergies is to avoid foods that can cause allergy. But it's also important that for foods that are excluded, suitable alternatives are introduced to avoid nutrient deficiencies. Equip yourself with enough knowledge to read and understand food labels to know if there is any allergy causing ingredient present before buying any ready-to-eat food stuff," says detician and sports nutritionist Deepshikha Agarwal.

Be safe
-When in restaurants, avoid calling for a dish with too many ingredients or anything which is completely unknown to you. Always ask ingredients used before trying a new recipe.

-Avoid salad bars, juice bars or self-serve buffets. Arm yourself with enough knowledge so you can be constantly vigilant about what you eat, and what you need to avoid.

-Go for food intolerance/ allergy tests as a precaution to know about its intolerances beforehand.

-If you're unsure if you have an allergy or hypersensitivity, withdraw the food for two weeks, than reintroduce it to see if you get a reaction.

Foods known to cause allergies
It is observed that many infants under one year old suffer from cow's milk allergy, making it the most common food allergy of childhood. The substitute to cow's milk can be soya milk. In adults, the most common foods that cause allergic reactions are shellfish (shrimp, crayfish, lobster, and crab), soybeans, peanuts, honey, milk, eggs, peanuts, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts, soya or wheat.

It's certified that yoga eases backache

One of the largest US studies on yoga certifies that it does ease chronic back pain and other associated symptoms.
"We found yoga classes more effective than a self-care book," said Karen J. Sherman, senior investigator at Group Health Research Institute (GHRI), who led the study.
Back-related function was better and symptoms were diminished with yoga at 12 weeks andbenefits - including less use of painkillers - lasted at least six months for both yoga and stretching, with a thorough follow-up of more than nine in 10 participants.
In the trial, 228 adults in six cities were randomly assigned to 12 weekly 75-minute classes of either yoga or stretching exercises or a comprehensive self-care book called 'The Back Pain Helpbook', the journal Archives of Internal Medicine reports.
Nine in 10 of them were primary care patients at Group Health Cooperative. Participants in the trial typically had moderate - not severe - back pain and relatively good mental health, and most had been at least somewhat active before the trial started, according to a GHRI statement.
Interviewers who didn't know the patients' treatment assignments assessed their back-related function and pain symptoms at six weeks, 12 weeks and six months.

The type of yoga used in the trial, called Viniyoga, adapts the principles of yoga for each individual and physical condition, with modifications for people with physical limitations. The yoga classes also used breathing exercises, with deep relaxation at the end.
"The most straightforward interpretation of our findings would be that yoga's benefits on back function and symptoms were largely physical, due to the stretching and strengthening of muscles."
"People may have actually begun to relax more in the (yoga) stretching classes than they would in a typical exercise class," she added.
"Our results suggest that both yoga and stretching can be good, safe options for people who are willing to try physical activity to relieve their moderate low back pain," Sherman concluded.IANS

Treat your feet with fancy massages

What comes to your mind when you see offers like Hot lava shell massage or Blueberry cheesecake or Chocolate fondue on a spa menu?

A relaxing treat for your body with drooping chocolate and yummy cheesecake, is it? Well, not really - these are just exotic names of foot massages that will leave your feet happy.

Amid a plethora of spas in every nook and corner of the city, Defence Colony's Seven Seas Evania Spa offers a range of foot massages by taking inspiration from around the globe. They offer Hot Lava Shell massage selected from the Philippine Islands, Volcanic Hot Stone massage from Japan, Hot Bamboo massage from Thailand and so on.

The fancy names are just to attract attention, you are told, as Seven Seas Chief Operating Officer (COO) Arpit Sharma suggests to you to go for Blueberry Cheese Cake, the hot seller.

Once you enter the spa, the fragrance of aromatic oils fills the nostrils and the pristine white ambience serves as a balm for a tired mind. Soothing meditational music and aromatic candles add to the comforting atmosphere.

As you leave the reception area, you enter a dimly-lit room with five comfortable couches, brass oval-shaped lamps and golden transparent curtains -- tickling your senses and your feet itch for that pampering.

The curtains are the dividers between two couches and each section has a horizontal mirror on one side of the wall.

And so begins the journey of cleaning the feet and leg up to the knee with water, followed with scrubbing. The therapist, slowly and in rhythmic motion, moves her hand pressing acupuncture points to relieve stress and tension.

This therapy is enriched with antioxidants and use of natural honey, Vanilla extracts, Olive oil and sweet Almond oil hydrates and conditions the skin, making it supple and deliciously silky.

This calms your mind. And by the time she massages your legs with a cream, you are already transcended into the dreamy world of solace.

You can opt to sip a herbal tea or else slip into the mode of nirvana and enjoy the blissful ride to an unknown world -- till the therapist wakes you up and offers you a back massage. After that 10 minutes of twisting and turning which will give you a head-to-toe relaxation.

It doesn't end here. Make sure to eat your share of dessert that will elevate your cheerful mood by a thousand times.

Asked why he decided to venture into foot massages, Sharma smilingly replied: "How many of us actually say thank you to our feet that carry the burden of our body weight? We find ways of pampering our body but ignore the feet completely."

"The idea is (that) people can come, get their feet pampered, de-stress, relax and leave this place with a satisfying smile. If that happens, you know the effort was worth it," he said.

There are nine therapists, including three males, who are well-trained and guarantee a getaway to another world with their well-measured, accurate pressure.

The place offers everyday discounts to provide experience at best possible cost.

So, just the perfect time to say happy feet! IANS

Breast cancer cases in India to double by 2015

Breast cancer has overtaken cervical cancer to become  the leading site of cancer in metro cities and is expected to double by 2015, experts said on Wednesday.
"Breast cancer has overtaken cervical cancer to become the leading site of cancer in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Bhopal, Ahmedabad and Kolkata with the relative proportion ranging from 21.7 percent to 28.7 per cent," said P.K. Julka, professor of Oncology, All India institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Julka said though the incidence of breast cancer in India per 100,000 population is significantly less compared to US, France, Denmark, Sweden, Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Italy,Singapore, Brazil and Japan but the mortality is almost 50 percent of the rate.
"The lifetime probability of developing breast cancer in India is one in 22 women compared to one in eight in US and other developed countries," he said.

In India, the number of new breast cancer cases is about 115,000 per year and this is expected to rise to 250,000 new cases per year by 2015.
Explaining the risk factors, Julka pointed to increasing age probability, lack of childbearing or breast feeding, higher hormone levels, late age of menopause, smoking, alcohol and economic status.
Breast cancer is usually treated with surgery and then possibly with chemotherapy or radiation, or both.
Targeted therapies for breast cancer focuses on proteins that signal cancer cells to grow and divide uncontrollably and have been found useful in the management of the disease.
"Targeted therapy means the specific medication targeting the particular group of cancer cell and destroying them without affecting the normal healthy cells so that treatment induced side effects are less," said Shyam Aggarwal, senior medical oncologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
Giving an account of the treatment cost of targeted gene therapy Amit Agarwal, consultant medical oncology, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj says, "The actual cost of the treatment depends upon the type of the drugs used. Therefore, the cost can vary from Rs.10-15,000 a month to Rs.3 to 4 lacs a month."
"The side-effects associated with the targeted therapies are very minimal and significantly non-specific when compared to the conventional chemotherapy methods. Apart from this the success rate is 30-40 percent," he added.
Each year 10.9 million people suffer from breast cancer worldwide that results in 6.7 million deaths from the disease. The breast cancer is prevalent in almost all regions of the world and there is no country in which cancer is a rare occurrence.IANS
